The San Francisco 49ers have signed former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen to their active roster.

Rosen, who was on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad, was drafted by the Cardinals and played one season in Arizona in 2018 before being traded to the Miami Dolphins when the team drafted Kyler Murray with the first pick in the 2019 NFL draft.

The 49ers, who have been playing their home games at the Cardinals' stadium because of COVID-19 protocols in Santa Clara, Calif., play the Cardinals in Glendale on Saturday as the visiting team.

Jimmy Garoppolo's 21-day return window was just activated by the 49ers after he was on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain, but it's not known when he could return.

C.J. Beathard is expected to start for San Francisco against Arizona.

Rosen played in 14 games with Arizona as a rookie, completing 217 of 393 passes for 2,278 yards. The threw 11 touchdown passes and had 14 passes intercepted.

The Cardinals traded up to get him with the No. 10 pick in the 2018 draft, giving up the No. 15, No. 79 and No. 152 picks to acquire the pick from the Raiders.

They traded him to the Dolphins for a second-round pick (wide receiver Andy Isabella) and a fifth-round pick that they later traded.

Rosen played in six games in Miami, throwing for 567 yards on 58-for-109 passing with one touchdown and five interceptions.

The Dolphins released Rosen after drafting Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald said that Rosen had a "bright future ahead of him" after he was traded from the Cardinals.

"I got a chance to talk with Josh every day and I know it’s been a tumultuous few months since all of these rumors have been swirling about the number one pick," Fitzgerald said, "but I don’t know if I’ve seen a young man, 22-years-old, be able to handle himself in a situation more effectively.

“I just have a lot of respect for him as a young man, how he’s conducted himself, how he prepares, his mental approach to football and life in general. I really enjoyed my time around him and I wish him the very best as he moves on to Miami. He has a bright future ahead of him and I want to see him do his thing."
